Accommodation

When going on safari in Africa choice of accommodation is very key to the comfort and safari experience.

Below is an overview of the general accommodation options available for safari seekers.

Mobile Tented and Seasonal Camps

As the name suggests, these are non-permanent, luxury tents that are mobile tented camps that are often set up for a period three to six month periods following the great migration and other wildlife movements, putting you in the best locations for game viewing depending on the destination you are at.

They come complete with flushing toilets and hot and cold running water and a separate dining tent and are setup in remote game viewing areas away from the normal tourist circuits.

Safari Lodges

These are fully permanent in location accommodation built out of stone, wood, thatch, bricks, mortar or a combination of all with a more or less hotel like feeling. They vary from basic three star accommodations to the most luxurious five star structures some with complete indoor showers and some have bathtubs.

Most of them have been designed to blend well into the African bush and the local structural designs. These are the most typical types of safari accommodation in Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia and Botswana.

Permanent Tented Camps

These are non-movable permanent structures built on a concrete or wooden stilts with canvas tent sides. Some have zippers for entry and lately some have doors.

For adventure lovers these are ideal for intimate atmosphere.  They offer separate bathroom and showers with hot and cold running water and electricity.  Some have private viewing decks and other amenities.

Fly Camping

These are well-organized but simple sleeping with tents out in the open wilderness which are set up.

Private Safari Houses

Private safari houses are generally solid structures with multiple en-suite rooms and communal areas which gives them an edge to be ideal for families or small groups of friends travelling together.

Levels of comfort for these facilities will vary from one private house to the other, but the key factor is the exclusivity and privacy associated with hiring the whole facility on a private basis and having dedicated staff during your stay.

Transport during your Safari

The type of transport which you choose for your travel between the parks and when you go out from the camps on “game drives” to see the wildlife has an important effect on your overall safari experience.

You can choose between driving from the arrival city to the parks which you are visiting on a road safari or flying in for an air safari or a mix of both.
